Hastings River, the only wine region of Northern Rivers zone, has a viticulture and winemaking history that dates back to 1837. In 1980, the area was reinvigorated as a wine region by the Cassegrain family. The family successfully introduced some new varieties which were able to adapt the high summer humidity, high rainfall and warm temperatures of this region. As far as the soil is concerned, the region has rich, free-draining red volcanic and alluvial soils. The main wine styles produced in this region are the Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Semillon, and Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot.
