Family owned Urlar Estate’s 31 hectare vineyard is situated on the ancient soils of Gladstone, Wairarapa in New Zealand. The vineyard is home to 94,000 grapevines that are nurtured using organic and biodynamic principles. The wine company is led by founders Angus and Davina Thomson, originally from Scotland.
The hand harvested Riesling grapes for this tropical and balanced white wine were first sorted for the ripest bunches, and then gently pressed. This pressing avoided any unattractive phenolics in the wine. In a glass, the drink exhibits a pale green straw colour. A swirl of the glass releases bright aromas of Granny Smith apples, citrus and lime zest. These lively fragrances are seamlessly followed by a dry palate. Showing a tight mineral line, the richly textured palate makes way for a pleasing finish. This delicious wine has been crafted for consumption upon release, though 5 or more years of cellaring will be highly rewarding. Suggested food pairings are strong cheeses, Asian dishes and mildly spiced tapas.
