At a local South Australian pub, a coin was flipped and it landed on tails, meaning my great great great grandfather, Joseph Gilbert, lost the bet and had to change his property name from ‘Karrawatta’ to ‘Pewsey Vale’. Joseph Gilbert made his first wine in 1847. Since then, the Gilbert family has continued to produce wine grapes and I am excited to reignite Karrawatta. We produce small batch, single vineyard wines from two diverse vineyards, one in the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills and the other in Langhorne Creek. All vines are detail hand-pruned and the fruit selectively picked and whole bunch-pressed to nurture the wines from vineyard to glass.
