A renowned winery, Leeuwin Estate is considered to be one of the founding wineries of the reputed Margaret River wine region. In the year 1972, a pioneering winemaker from Napa Valley, Robert Mondavi was the first to recognize the potential of this chosen vineyard site as a premium location for the growing and nurturing of juicy wine grapes. He acted as a mentor to Tricia and Denis Horgan, who founded Leeuwin Estate in the year 1974. The first vineyards of the estate were hand planted throughout a five - year period starting from the year 1975. In 1978, the winery was established and inaugurated, featuring modern machinery and fancy equipment. A trial vintage was launched and when appraised, the first commercial vintage for Leeuwin Estate was released in the year 1979. The winery first received recognition when Decanter Magazine awarded its highest recommendation to Leeuwin’s 1980 ‘Art Series’ Chardonnay range.
