A part of the Southern New South Wales zone, Gundagai is a newly developed wine region covering Tumut, Cootamundra and Junee within its territory. Owing to a boon in viticulture since 1995, Gundagai wine region has continued to excel in Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wine styles. The region has also witnessed a growth in cellar doors and wine-related events, which establish it as a reputed wine region. Having a growing season rainfall of 270mm, Gundagai vineyards mostly experience warm to hot temperatures, and low humidity. Only some parts near the Australian Alps have a cooler climate. The altitude varies between 200 and 300 metres. The region has red earth soil type and red podzols, with variable types found along major rivers and creeks.
