The Bay of Plenty region is located at the further east corner of New Zealand located on the Northern Island. From the Coromandel Peninsula in the west, the region stretches to Cape Runaway in the east. The area was named by Captain Cook, who explored this region in 1769. The climate of the Bay of Plenty wine region is temperate, maritime and shows coastal influences. It is one of the warmest regions of the New Zealand with warm and humid summers, and mild winters. The vineyards in this region have fertile soils as per New Zealand standards. Adjoining Waikato region, Bay of Plenty has a small but robust collection of wineries that produce fabulous Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc wine styles. The region also produces Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties.
